The Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP)
and Safari Children's Dentistry

The CDCP helps parents of children under the age of 18, with a family income of less than $90K, cover some of the costs of dental care when the family has no access to work or private insurance.

Here are some FAQ&A

1. Who qualifies for this benefit?

Families with a net income of under $90,000 per year and without private dental coverage qualify for The Canada Dental Care Plan.

2. How do I apply for the Canada Dental Care Plan?

Eligible parents/guardians need to apply through the Canada Revenue Agency using their CRA online account. The benefit year is from July 1 through to June 30 of the following year.  Every year, parents must reapply for this benefit through their CRA account.  If approved, you will have a benefit plan card mailed to you.  Please bring this card with you to your child's appointment.

3. How does the Canada Dental Care Plan work? Do they pay the dentist directly?

The Canada Dental Care Plan will ONLY pay the dental office - Not the parent/patient.  On the day of service, Safari will directly bill the CDCP for your child's appointment and any costs not covered by the CDCP must be paid by you before leaving.

4. How much of the cost does the CDCP cover?

The CDCP has a fee guide with the maximum amounts that they will cover towards different procedures.  As Safari Children's Dentistry is a Pediatric Specialty office, we follow the Pediatric Dental Specialist Fee Guide.  While the percentage of the fees paid under CDCP fee guide can be 40%, 60% or 100% there will always be a difference for your child's appointments at Safari.  There are also some procedures that are not covered by the CDCP and will have to be paid for on the date of the appointment.

5. What are the coverage limits for the Canada Dental Care Plan?

There is no dollar maximum per year for this plan, however, there are some coverage limitations and some services are not covered.

Any balance above what is paid for by the Canada Dental Care Plan is the responsibility of the parent/guardian that brings the child to the appointment.

6. How will I know what will be covered and what my out of pocket costs will be?

For all appointments, prior approval for treatment must be obtained.  Safari will send an estimate to Sun Life (the Canada Dental Care Plan adjudicators/administrators) in order to ensure that the patient has coverage on the date of service and that the procedures planned will be covered at the approved amount.  If it is your first time using this plan, please ensure that we have the information prior to your child's appointment so that we can send the estimate.  Safari would be happy to send you a copy of this estimate at your request.

7. Will The Canada Dental Care plan affect any of my other government benefits?

No. The Canada Dental Care plan will not reduce other federal income-tested benefits such as the Canada Worker Benefit, the Canada Child Benefit and the Goods and Services Tax Credit.  The CDCP can also be used in conjunction with Healthy Smiles Ontario, however at this time, Safari Children's Dentistry does not take HSO.
